How to Spend 1 Day in Zadar

by

Zadar offers lots to see and do, from a UNESCO-listed ancient town to gorgeous outlying islands. It’s difficult to do everything in one day, but it’s doable with a little organization. Here are some of our recommendations for making the most of a 24-hour stay in the Adriatic’s cultural capital.

Morning:

In the morning, take a city tour. On a city tour, begin your day by learning about Zadar’s history and culture. Before the Dalmatian heat becomes too hot, get out early to see the city’s Roman ruins, medieval cathedrals, and modern installations. For a more immersive sightseeing experience, take a bike or Segway tour to save time and avoid foot fatigue, or stroll around the city streets with a guide.

Afternoon: Take to the Sea

Cool yourself from the noon heat with a sea excursion after a relaxing lunch on the riverfront. A hands-on sailing adventure or a skipper-led cruise are both options. Some half-day cruises include visits to surrounding islands like Ugljan or Osljak, where you may swim, snorkel, or sunbathe in peaceful coves, or explore agricultural countryside and island communities for a taste of Dalmatian life.

Night: Watch a Dalmatian Sunset

Zadar’s sunsets are regarded as some of the best in the world, and can be enjoyed from anywhere in the city. Several afternoon cruises extend into the evening and include dusk views; alternatively, treat yourself to a romantic sunset tour or watch from the Sea Organ for a holistic experience. If you’re not quite ready for bed, visit one of the late-night cafés or pubs in the Old Town for drinks or ice cream.
